OMF export

OMF export

It seems that exporting OMF files for use in Protools should be quite straightforward. However, I'm exporting 43 tracks of a 52' film as an OMF and it comes out as a file with a blank icon that once opened, is full of data and it's only 830MB. I can't open the OMF in FCP or Soundtrack Pro either so it seems that I'm doing something wrong. I've tried exporting smaller soundtracks and the same thing happens.

I haven't worked with OMF's before and the blank icon looks suspicious.

Also - I'm trying to find out if Protools LE 7 is compatible with Protools HD 8.

Many thanks,
Mark

that blank icon is what you get with OMFs.
and you cant "open" an OMF file unless you open it into a sound editing app.

OMF's should open in SoundTrackPro, but it depends on which version. (2.0 and up i think)
are you getting a warning

yes, the file size does seem a bit odd.
do you have a LOT of air in your tracks?

normally people with that many tracks would hit the OMF 2Gig file-size limit,
and be posting here asking about that.
(answer is to spit the show into smaller sequences)

are all your tracks/clips enabled?
they have to be to go into the OMF, no muting of clips allowed.

generally, my experience is that ProTools is MUCH more inter-version compatible that FCP. you can open open one version's project or OMF in another, and get a warning about wont come across.
but to be sure, ask your sound team.

cheers,
