Can't export QT mov file

Using FCP 6.06 on a MacBook Pro 2.5 duo w 4G RAM, w data on FW 400 external drive. Project was from RED footage, REDCODE compressor, cut it, reviewed, no problem. Tried various export settings, starting from straight " export to QT", and a slew of permutations from there in QT conversion. Each time, the MBP would get to rendering / writing- take 30-55 minutes to write a 3 minute project, and the screen would freeze and I get a message in 4 languages telling me that the OS had failed and I had to power down.

On the 8th attempt, the machine did export a .mov file, but it is a "FCP mov file" NOT a straight QT .mov file.

First time out on RED footage, and I have the feeling I'm missing something hiding in plain sight. Given my level of techo frustration- I can't see it.

Many thanks for the group wisdom and generosity as always...

"it is a "FCP mov file" NOT a straight QT .mov file. "

this is what you get when you export a "QuickTime Movie" from FCP.
slightly confusing.
it will open & play in QT, and on the whole behave just like a QT file
i usually drag & drop onto QT icon in dock.

you can also do a get info on the file,
and set it to "Open With" QT player,
and also set it so ALL simiar files open in QT.

if this is destined for a windows system,
you should definitely do that, as well as add the .mov extension if it isn't there already.

Yeah, but what's causing his kernal panic while he's exporting? because that's what he described.
