'apple-R' render shortcut not working?

Hello,

Ive been using FCP since version 4, and have learnt a lot here over the years. My long time set up is:
FCP version 6.0.3.
Power Mac G5
CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
Memory: 4 GB


Recently, the APPLE-R render shortcut has stopped working, as has 'render selection' if selected in the drop down menus. I can use 'render all > needs render' to do the same job, but there isnt a shortcut for that. Its driving me a bit nuts to have to use the mouse/menus for a function I need to use constantly.

Does anyone have any ideas how/why this might have happened, and how I can reinstate 'render selection' and thus it's shortcut?

I assume you tried trashing your preferences. What needs to be rendered? Is it red in the render bar? Is red checked on in the render selection menu? How are you making the selection?

The second after I posted, the function mysteriously started working again. I guess Im pushing my system to its limits, and its got a little glitchy of late.

Not necessarily, Sam. The render options can be buggy going back to at least FCP5. The workarounds include:

1. Alternate between APPLE-R (Render Selection) and OPTION-R (Render All).
2. Select what you want first (or de-select, if you had already selected), then try the two commands again.
3. Use Clip Enable/Disable (CONTROL-B) to turn off something small in a section you want to render. Turn it back on and retry the render.
4. Disable all audio render options and use only OPTION-APPLE-R (Audio Mixdown) for audio renders.
5. Use Render Manager to dump render files and re-render everything.
