Multiclip markers not working

I'm just getting my head around multiclip editing and when I start the clip playing in the timeline and click on one of the 2 clips in the viewer the edit happens immediately rather than adding a marker to the timeline as I've seen in several tutorials.

This causes me to get a dropped frames message.

How do I get the clip changes to add as markers first then change to edits once I've finished?

I'm playing the timeline and clicking on clip 1 or 2 in the viewer to choose the camera angle.

Whenever I click on the clip 1 or 2 a trim edit appears in the timeline, playback stops and I get the dropped frame message

If I play the viewer instead of the timeline then playback stops when I click on clip 1 or 2 but no edits or markers appear.
