Using SD video (pal) projected images are not sharp. Is this because of compression?
What compression do I use..Mpeg 2 and at what bit rates? Will this help get sharper looking images?

Serious lack of information there. You said MPEG-2, so I'm assuming you're making a video DVD. Projecting to how large? What is the source footage -- what codec, what original source? What is your editing timeline set to?

I'm in NTSC land, but I think a PAL DVD is only 720x576px. That will not fill most standard computer monitors without a blowup, let alone if projected to a huge screen.

What you see on a projection screen is typically 2K resolution or thereabouts. PAL is 720x576. It's not going to look very good no matter what you do.
