PAL into NTSC docPosted by dan chapman
Someone in Italy is offering to shoot an interview for my documentary, but they can't get an NTSC camera (I shot in NTSC SD 24p 16:9 Anamorphic for it). Will I be able to incorporate PAL footage into my FCP timeline or am I just asking for trouble. ???
Someone suggested converting the footage through Mpeg Streamclip first. I need to figure out a solution next week. Dual 2.5 Ghz G5, 5GB SDRAM, FCP 6.0.6, QT 7.6.2, OS 10.4.11

Well, here's where going through a public poll leads to disastrous consequences. If Mpeg Streamclip was a great tool for standards conversion, nobody in the world will buy a Teranex. >I shot in NTSC SD 24p 16:9 Anamorphic for it 24p? That means you are editing your footage in a 29.97 fps timeline? If so, what you do is to get those guys to shoot at 25p, then make a copy of the clips and conform it to 23.98 fps in Cinema Tools, then add a 2:3 pulldown with the JES Deinterlacer. Or you could do that in After Effects. If you shot 24pA or 24pN, you get them to shoot at 25p, then conform it to 23.98 fps in Cinema Tools. www.strypesinpost.com
Best would be to shoot 24p on the NTSC side, remove the pulldown and edit in a 24p timeline. Shoot 25p on the PAL side, conform in Cinema Tools to 24p, and edit along with the NTSC source material for the 24p master. Then you're clean for the web or DVD. It's quick to add 3:2 for broadcast, or conform back to 25p for PAL distribution.

Then you're good to go. You don't need a Teranex. Just get them to shoot at 25p, and send it to CTs to batch conform to 23.98. www.strypesinpost.com
Not screwed. You can always deinterlace the footage and time remap it to 23.976 in Compressor in one go. But as with any form of interpolation, you always try to avoid it if you can, as you will lose resolution, motion compensated or not. 25p camera, which is inexcusable in this day and age, if not, what i just mentioned.
