Moving a 29.97 Timeline to a 23.98 Question.

Hello,
I am using a 2.66GHZ IMAC ( 9.1), 4 Gigs of Ram), Running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and using FCP 7.0

I need to copy a 29.97 Project into a 23.98 Timeline.

1) The video was shot in 24P mode, but is NTSC 29.97. I also have removed the telecine to make it 24P. Same problem occurs with either mode as I've tried both( 29.97 video and 24p video).

2)I copy and paste the project from a 29.97 timeline into the 23.98 and the project jumps from 19:20 to 24:06.
2a) My footage goes from F1,F2,F3,F4, F4Copy pattern( in a 29.97 timeline) to a 24P pattern with no frames repeating.

From what I understand my project should be almost the same length in either timeline.
My Audio copies properly, but not my video.

3) I also get black frames in between almost each cut, which might be normal, but also some of the shots get longer/shorter, disappear completely/use the wrong shot altogether)

4)I also can't delete my preferences. There is no Final Cut User Pro folder in the Library/Preferences.

Anyone know what is going on?
-Thanks.

Why? It isn't a good idea. It is bad on MANY fronts. First of being that gaps will appear between nearly every cut. Second being that FCP doesn't remove the pulldown from the footage properly. As you noticed, FCP doesn't do 2:3 pulldown, it does 2:2:2:4.

Sounds right. 24p runs at 29.97. 24pA is 23.98 in a 29.97 stream, and pulldown needs to be removed to get to 23.98. But I wonder, why do you want to get to 23.98? What do you hope to gain? You already have the film look...you can get that without needed to get the 23.98 frame rate.

The reason why I want to have the project at 23.98 for PAL conversion as well.

Pal is 25 frames per second.
If you are going to convert to pal, I highly recommend Nattress Standards Converter.

This is something you plan for WELL BEFORE you start editing. If you know you want to to to PAL, and that editing at 23.98 would be the easiest way to do that, then you needed to shoot 23.98, or convert all your footage to 23.98 BEFORE you started editing. You can't just put the footage into a 23.98 sequence and boom, it'l perfect. Nope. FCP doesn't do that.

Best option now would be to master at 29.97, then convert to PAL from there. Instead of going 29.97 to 23.98 to 25fps.

In my next life the world will all have the same television standards.
