I'm wondering if anyone knows if there are any hardware add-ons to give you more audio outputs -- preferably something professional (XLR or phono). The only thing I've had a real problem with moving from analog (tape-based) to digital (computer) editing is the lame-ass mini plug you're supposed to use to monitor audio from a timeline. Worst of all, it's on the front of the computer... You shouldn't HAVE to have a mixer to incorporate studio monitors.

Get an audio interface. They come in FireWire and USB.

But you want a more "professional" monitoring method while scoffing at mixers? No professional audio setup I've ever seen is without a mixer.

The MOTU Ultra-Lite is a great start, and for $600, the quality outshines the cost.
If you EVER have a problem with the unit, a $75 cheque to MOTU will get you a brand new unit.
