No need to buy anything - Disk Utility can display the SMART status of the drive. But in my experience, SMART can be hit and miss.
The problems you are experiencing may not necessarily be a physical issue with the drive; they could be an issue with the file system on the drive. It's worth giving DiskWarrior a try to see what it comes up with:
