I know this topic has been here, but I can't find it.

What are the differences between these 2 versions of FCP? AKA, why should I upgrade?

thx,

Thanks, I didn't see that and it does answer questions. 5.1.1 looks like mostly a maintenance release to me, especially for those using intel-o-mac (sic), but the automatically reattaching externally modded clips is definitely a good thing.

as for me, i have no probs doing what i'm doing, even with the new P2 workflow. definitely a learning curve there, but i like it.

Don't upgrade to 5.1 until you are done with your project. Footage imported from P2 under 5.0.4 have issues when working with them in FCP 5.1...skipping and dropping frames when you add a transition or filter.

But it is more than a maintenance upgrade. It allows FCP to work on Intel macs as well as PowerPC macs, fixes the Media manager, and adds more codec support.

no, i'd never upgrade in mid project. unlike my former boss, who - back in the analog and tape day - switched out the ENTIRE studio in mid-project. everything: edit controller, cameras, decks, CCUs, DVEs, audio, every piece in the place was changed. and he made it work.

talk about brass ones!

I notice that I couldn't upgrade 5.0.4 directly to 5.1.1. Is 5.1.1 only an upgrade to the 5.1 Universal version? That would mean that I must buy that first...

Just curious.

you have to send your 5.0 installer disks back to apple, with some $$,
and they will send you back the 5.1 installer disks.

making disk image backups of the disks before you pop them in the post is a good idea.
