OT: Telly Comes to LAPosted by Kevin Monahan
Hey Gang,
Just thought I'd let ya'll now that I've put in my 30 day notice on the SF apartment and I'll be in LA starting on 9/1. I'll hopefully be residing in the Burbank-Hollywood area. Yes, Mike, this is for REAL this time. ;-) Looking forward to connecting with LAFCPUG members, attending meetings and getting back into the creative realm. Looking to specialize in HD post, film projects, digital onlines, consultations and advanced training for working editors. I'm taking appointments in advance, so if you'd like to book me, contact me offlist. I'm also starting a consortium of creative professionals not only in LA, but worldwide, called "42 Hills" which aims to put together the most talented editors and motion graphics pros worldwide. More to come on that later. Until then, I'm scouring Craig's List for a suitable place to live and work. I would like to get a loft type of pad, but I don't think they exist except for downtown LA. I don't think downtown is the best location for a post studio, so I'm looking for alternatives. I'll probably have to get an apartment and a separate office space. If anyone has any leads or ideas along these lines, I'd appreciate it! For the time being, I'll still be running SF Cutters and heading up to the Bay Area on a regular basis to visit family and friends and to attend to any needs of the Cutters. Thanks and see you all soon! Thanks Mike! Looking forward to hangin' out. I'll drop PH a mail.
You know, LA is a bit better deal than SF. I pay almost $300 for parking alone!! I can probably save around $500 a month on basic expenses in LA. And I won't have to walk 5 blocks just to get in my car. :-( SF is markedly more expensive overall and way more of a lifestyle hassle than LA. Sure, it's prettier, nice lifestyle, lotsa things to do in SF - but it's definitely a PIA for simple things like doing laundry and going grocery shopping. You give up yer parking spot? Someone is always waiting to take it. I've never seen an open parking spot for more than 30 seconds within 6 blocks of my apartment. Looks like I'll be making friends with my 300 ZX once more. So glad I've got A/C in that puppy! I'm gonna need to stay cool while sitting in traffic at the 405 split! As for lofts they are the "in" thing now. They've built some in the Hollywood area. I know that there are some new ones off sunset and vine and melrose and highland (I think). And there's a new artists lofts being built in the NoHo arts district, but I don't think they will be done in a for a little while. [www.thenoholofts.com]
And there are some near Echo Park/silverlake area. okay. Good luck.
Thanks Adolfo and all!
I can't believe the amount of apartments for rent. I'm a bit overwhelmed at the number of them - and a bit underwhelmed at the quality of them. My current SF pad is like a well crafted sea going vessel. It's both solid and attractive. LA is like land of the kitsch architecture. Bland 60's boxes mostly. Hopefully I can find something with some character. Hi Kev:
Many years, no talk! I am working in Burbank these days, drop me a line, we should lunch once you get settled in. Best of luck, you will hopefully like it here. A bit hotter than SF (it was 108 last week!). A LOT of the work in the industry is done in Burbank, everyone thinks it's all in Hollywood but most of it is within two miles of where I work, which looks like a boring Armenian suburb. Almost all of our clients are within a couple of miles (Disney, Warner Bros) and it's a quick trip over the hill to get to Fox and Paramount. You will get to know all of the cool places to get away (Santa Barbara, San Diego, Old Town Pasadena, Ventura, Laguna Niguel, etc.) so even if you are working and living in hot, smoggy Burbank, there are some really great places within an hour or two. Best of luck, Dan
Thanks Dan. I'm well aware it all goes down in Burbank. I'm actually trolling westside rentals right now. Keyword Search: Burbank, Studio City, Jacuzzi. Hey, this boy's gonna live it up. :-)
I'll be down there next FRI-SUN to pick up my place. Kevin Monahan Social Support Lead, DV Products Adobe Adobe After Effects Adobe Premiere Pro Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro Community Blog Follow Me on Twitter!
Hey Kev:
When you come down to look, you can drool over these [www.littletokyolofts.com] Sounds perfect for you, a REAL loft in Little Tokyo. Start at 300K but kind of a long haul for commuting to Burbank/Studio City. Little Tokyo is actually pretty cool and knowing your propensity for all things Japanese, seems like a fit for you? Dan
No Joey, I don't have kids. I wanted them at one point in my life, but now I realize that they're the hugest time bandits. Plus, the women here in SF haven't been all that cooperative in the baby makin' department.
Dan, thanks for the tip on Little Tokyo. I'll be checking out the downtown loft scene, but I think that you are right. I may want to place myself a little closer to the action. I hear there are lofts in Hollywood now. Expensive though! Take care guys! After only 4 years of marriage, the first one is starting college in a few weeks. Perfect excuse to get rid of all sorts of stuff lying around the house "for the apartment", and buy new! Waaaaay better than years of 2am feedings... really.... do you believe me? do I believe me?!?! ;0P
Kevin, if you dont mind a little more heat, there are an abundance of new apartments and condos being built in the North Hollywood arts district. It's pretty central to all the major studios and 10 minutes to Hollywood.
