640x480 versus 720x480

Why does FCP expand files from 640x480 to 720x480 when imported? This distorts perfect circle Photoshop files and makes me go into the Distort function to bring them back to their original size.

Not sure what you mean. If you created a 640x480 picture in square pixels, it would have to fill a 720x480 video frame to look as you intended when you created the image. This is because video pixels are not displayed as square pixels.

Unless it's being saved as a PSD with transparency or layers and imported as sequence. Needs to be a flat graphics file.
