Say you have a project edited by someone using FCP 4 or 5. You want to take that project (and the media files obviously) and work on it on your own machine running FCP 3. Is there any way to do this?

No way back to version 3 or earlier.

seems like a very good time to update, though it may not be cheap fcp universal "cross grade" is cheaper than ever.

if you can find it for cheap find a part of studio like soundtrak or any of tose and me sure u get the disk, than send that in and it wl be like 200 bucks for the ull 5.1 studio

while not the kindest thing to do, it's not illegal, you just need a disk

check it out theres a cross grade question down the page some where, and with it a link to apples price page

If you really need to work in FCP 3 probably the only thing you can do is export a reference movie from the higher version, import that into your version, lay it on V1 and use it as an accurate reference to redo the cut on V2.
