Logging fields greyed out in Final Cut Express

I know this is supposed to be a Final Cut Pro forum, but perhaps you can deal with an FCX question for me. We have several MacBooks using FCX in addition to our FCP machines. We have to use the preset for video converters because we are usually capturing through a Canopus or a DV deck, and FCX doesn't have the "non-controllable device" setting. When we use the "video converter" preset, it causes all of the logging fields in Capture Tool to be greyed out. We want students to enter logging information before capture, but they can't. Is there a way to get around this?
