How are these unusual transitions done?

Scroll down to Wakatobi Guest impressions video, then at :24 seconds there is this weird blur transition

Same video, at about :45, the right video blurs out.

Then another cool one at 1:01. It seems if you are interviewing people and there is a part where you want to cut out without reshooting all over, the little weird blur transition is interesting.

By the way, do you think the guest interviews were done with a shotgun mic or on board mic? I hear lots of background sounds.
