Capturing HDV vs SD video

Mac Intel
FCP 7

When capturing HDV it captures each scene at every camera break automatically. Is this method available when capturing SD? I cannot find it listed in the manual.

Thanks.

No. It's a HDV thing.

In the HDV log and capture window, in the 'clip settings' tab there is a checkbox for 'create new clip on start stop'. It's not there in the DV log and capture setup.

what you DO get when capturing as DV is "DV Start/Stop detect".

its under the markers menu,
and will add a marker on each scene change.

then of course you can then make all those markers into subclips if you want.

i dont know if you get that when you capture as ProRes, or AIC, my guess is you don't.

Thanks Jude and Nick. This will save a lot of time and effort.

It looks as though I did not make it clear. I should have said:

Original footage shot in HDV, capturing to DV widescreen format. The 'DV start/stop detect' is grayed out.

Maybe what I am attempting to do is not possible.

Hi Grant.

i guess i could have been clearer, too.
DV Start/Stop Detect can be run on clips after they've been captured.

BTW,
if it's any use, i'll tell you how we dealt with our HDV>DV captures.

we had a LOT of material to ingest very quickly, so we had 2 systems going non-stop all day

- capture whole tapes into 2 systems, so maybe 12-16 tapes in a day
- note major scene changes as we capture (on paper, remember that?)
- run DV Start Stop on all clips
- lay clips into timelines, make independent
- find major scene changes, and remove 2 FRAMES at scene changes, and name scenes
- run divided clips through MEDIA MANAGER overnight (Copy, delete unused, no handles)

Media Manager needs the 2-frame gap between the clips to create separate files.
you will get 1 frame back after media management (cant remember if it's on the head or tail of the clip, sorry)
Media Manager retains the DV Start/Stop info, any other form of export loses it.

- next morning, check MM worked ok,
- delete original captures
- start capturing again.

OFFLINE / ONLINE

i have to admit though, Grant, that after cutting that film, the re-capturing of the final used shots as HDV was a real pain.
i vowed NOT to do it that way again, and that the next HDV job will be captured as HDV.

Nick,

I meant to thank you sooner, however, I got called away and am now back to editing. The process that you outlined works great. This saves me a lot of time during the initial capture process.

Thanks again.
