FCP not opening on some user logins.
May 09, 2010 09:50PM
I'm not sure how to describe all this but here goes.

I am an IT techy at a high school. We are running:-

We run FCS3 on 7 machines and FCS1 on 13 machines

Intel iMacs 10.6.2 (due to be updated soon to 10.6.3)
3.06ghz intel core 2 duos
4gb 1067 mhz ram

Each computer is connected by network to the school server.

There are many users of these computers and each have their own login which connect them straight to the server.

The problem is:

Under some users FCP refuses to open, under others it works. Sometimes users that can open it once or twice then cannot open it.

I have dumped preferences, reset pram, unplugged network cables and still it makes no difference. It is like a lottery. Sometimes it will, sometimes it wont.

We do have a local machine log in and so far it works under that every time as far as we can tell.

At present I am trying to work out whether it is in fact a FCP problem.

It is most frustrating to the students and teachers and to myself. When I sit and randomly log in as users I cannot make the problem occur.

I'm stumped. I have seen that one other user had a similar kind of problem but there was not much feedback and I have tried the things that were mentioned.

Help please if you can.

Does this sound like an authenticating issue and if so why. Each machine holds the license for the FCP on it. Is it in fact looking to the server for the license?

Yours gratefully

What happens when they try to open FCP? Is there any kind of error notice? If they are all networked it *could* be looking to see if duplicate copies are present on the network, but you say removing the network cables makes no difference. Plus they all have individual licences, right?

Firstly thanks for trying to help Jude. I really appreciate it.

FCS3 has a volume license and only is on those 7 machines.
FCS1 there are 8 machines on a volume license and the other 5 machines are individual licenses. We have used these licenses for a few years and the only new thing is that we are now using the newer imacs. (The previous imacs were not a problem and they were 2ghz intel core duos with 1.5gb 667mhz DDR2 SDRAM.)

There is no error notice. Sometimes it just closes before any thing can get under way and other times it gets all the way to the continue button and closes.

What is strange as i said, when we use a local machine login - that doesn't authenticate to the server - it just opens. The fact that it randomly decides who to allow to use it and then suddenly decides no you cant be here anymore is very weird.

I am wondering if it is something to do with how the machines are bound to the server. I have FCS3 at home on my own machine and I've never had any problems with it.

I had read about unplugging the network cables on another forum comment. I do wonder however if these machines need to authenticate since they are the ones with the volume licenses. They always seem to know if you're trying to trick them... clever little things.

Should I try unbinding the machines and see how the program behaves then.

Hope this helps, please ask more questions if necessary.

Hmm, it sounds more like a crash than refusing to open - can you check out the crash log? Maybe the Console can give some decent clues about what's going on.

Are these issues limited to FCS3 or do they affect the FCS1 machines as well? It's worth noting that FCS1 is not supported on Snow Leopard, and if you are running FCP 5.0.x it's not supported on Intel computers either.

If you can post one of the crash logs here, I can take a look at it.

My software:
Pro Maintenance Tools - Tools to keep Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro X, Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro running smoothly and fix problems when they arise
Pro Media Tools - Edit QuickTime chapters and metadata, detect gamma shifts, edit markers, watch renders and more

Here we are on the opposite sides of the world so our timing is different.

About the crash logs. I will look for maybe a few examples today and see what they say. I might grab a copy and attach them here for you.

The issues are running across FcS1 as well as FCS3. FCS1 is the 5.1.4 intel that was designed for the intels when they first came out. Even though it isn't supported on Snow Leopard wouldn't Rosetta have helped with that?

Considering the problem seems to run across 1 and 3 I'm not entirely convinced that it is that. I will look at the crash logs for both today as I can actually pinpoint a couple of machines that I have witnessed doing this.

I will get back to you in my evening (its 8.40am right now).

Thanks again for your time.

Hi Jude,

My process this morning was to log in as the student with troubles. FCP would get to the continue button and then just shut. I then tried again maybe a couple of times. Then I went to the library - prefs - FCP User Data - and deleted FCP7 prefs. The program then opened. Tried a few times and still ok.

I then l logged in as myself and FCP wouldn't even get to the continue button. It would just start opening then stop. I went to the library and couldn't gain access to any folders at all. Tried to change permissions to no avail. I went to accounts and deleted my account on the machine and made a new one. FCP still did not open. I went to Library and had access this time and deleted the FCP7 prefs from the User data folder and FCP then opened.

Maybe it's a permissions thing?

Anyway here is the crash log...

I'm no expert at crash logs - Jon may be your guy for this - but it looks like the system is detecting two of a bunch of things and not knowing which one to use. I did find a conversation that goes over my head here

which might help, or possibly make you think the sky is falling. smiling smiley

Jon? On the right track or way off?

No, it's just a warning, it shouldn't be a problem. Mine has that message too.

That's not a crash log though - it's just console output. Lisa, is it possible for you to post a crash log? In the Console, click Show Log List if it is not already showing, then navigate to ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter. You'll see several logs listed for Final Cut Pro. The last log is the most recent one.

I shall see if I can find one. When I looked in Library/Logs/ there was nothing in the CrashReporter. Should I have to be logged in as the user it was crashing for cause nothing showed there either. I will have another look. I'll t5ry a few different things as well as computers.
Also today we have a guy from Apple coming to look at a new server so I might ask him about the server connection side.
I so appreciate your input so will look for a crash log. Some of this stuff is way over my head.

I went in today onto 2 compouters with known crashes. Under my login they were both not opening FCP and the crash logs were empty. I had the console/log/crash reporter open and tried to open FCP and it didn't say anything when it quit - again at different stages. First computer the FCP (FCP7) icon just bounced a couple of times then stopped and the 2nd computer (FCP5.1.4) got all the way to continue and then just quit. No report came up. I did take a screen shot of what the console said that related just to FCP. I shall put it in a following post just in case it means anything...
We had an apple guy out to day to work on a new server and I ran the whole problem past him and he felt it was a permission thing. He could not explain why it randomly allowed people to use it then next time not. I then thought maybe the original image was not quite ok.
I am going to talk to the teacher who runs the classroom and ask if I can re-image one machine after saving all the work to an external harddrive. I would like to test the theory that the image we used in the first place was problematic. If the reimaging process (I will have to individually reinstall FCP on the machine) is successful then it will hopefully show the problem lies within the system.
I have never seen FCP behave this way before and have always found it to be completely reliable. So I would like to test and see if it is the computer itself.
I will definitely get back to you when I see what happens. I probably wont be able to test my theory until next week so will get back to you as soon as I have done.
Thanks again for your patience and help..

Thanks Lisa. If you figure it out and post the findings you'll probably save a whole lot of future IT people a lot of time and pain.

Looking back at the Console log, it would appear that crashes are not being logged for some reason:
> 11/05/10 8:58:21 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.1101493487[824] (com.apple.ReportCrash) Falling back to default Mach exception handler. Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self

I found this solution to the problem, which would indeed imply that it is related to permissions:

So if that's caused by permissions problems, it's likely that the Apple guy was right and your FCP problem is caused by that too.

Hi there to you all. Sorry it has taken me so long to come back here and make a note to you all.

Life has thrown a few curve balls and I never did get to reimage a machine and start from scratch. A pity really. Now it will have to wait for the end of the year. There wont be another chance to try a working solution.

I will however come back here at some stage with an update when I finally get my time to have a go.

Sorry we'll all have to wait a bit longer for this problem to be looked at further.

I'm having this same issue. It just started happening last week when I accidentally hit FCPX while FCP7 was open. So I force quit FCPX and a few minutes later FCP7 stopped responding. I've reinstalled the OS (doing and Archive and Install), and uninstalled FCPX, and FCS3, trashed all preference and reinstalled FCS3 (not FCPX). Still having the same issue. FCP7 will pop up the loading page and then just crashes.

The only "fix" if you want to call it that is create a new user and launch FCP and there's no problem. The problem seems to be linked to the user account but I can't figure out what's wrong with it in the current user account that's making it crash.

I do have the crash log as asked above. Can anybody help me out?

Thanks!

Eric

I thought I ran this software last week when the issue happened, but I could be mistaken, HOWEVER, running "Preference Manager" and trashing all FCP7 prefs and caches fixed the issue!

It can be found here: [www.digitalrebellion.com] Hope this helps someone else out too!
