Cannot log & capture, getting General Error message

working in FCP 7.0.3, importing HDV 1080i footage, ProRes 422. Attempting log & capture via Firewire. My Sony Z5U responds to computer commands and image is fine on screen, appearing to be captured. But the clips don't appear in my browser. I tried Refresh A/V devices but it didn't fix it. So I was going to re-open the project but now I'm getting a General Error message and it won't save the project.
