I Need to produce an avi clip for a digital signage display LCD used vertically. Anyone know if Final cut pro 7 can do a setup like that or how to monitor it?

You just work horizontally in the timeline if you want to.

You can set up a custom timeline in FCP to match the specs of the signage display. Then you edit like you normally would. When I've had to do stuff like this, I just build the whole thing horizontally with the text rotated 90 degrees so it plays correctly when standing up vertically.

That's generally how most of these vertical screens actually play their video, horizontally, but the monitor is rotated 90 degrees. Generally the left side of the screen is the bottom and the right side is the top, but you'll need to check with your client to see how the screen you will be playing on is oriented.

You beat me to it. We did the same thing for a casino back in 02'
for vertically orientated 16:9 TVs. It is the easiest way, as you describe.

How I'll do it is to edit in 4K with a mask. That way you can get real time preview without having to conform to weird display specs. When you're done, crop out the mask during mastering.

You can edit but rotate your monitor 90 degrees, But it also means that the video delivery is a video format meant for the display to be rotated 90 degrees.
