Upgrading from FCP 5.1.4 ?
December 11, 2011 03:44PM
I have an older G5 (non-intel) and am finally upgrading to OS 10.5 today. I am still using FCP 5.1.4. What is the newest version of FCP I can upgrade to with OS 10.5 ? After this I realize that I must get a new mac and upgrade everything. Thanks.

10.5 lets you run FCS 2, if I remember correctly.

If I were you, I wouldn't even bother. I remember the Tiger-Leopard transition as being extremely awkward and buggy. Is there a specific reason you're trying to upgrade a computer that's been obsolete for about five generations? I think you're just inviting problems, and it wouldn't be easy fixing them now.

I've been using FCP 2 (FCP 5.1.4) on an PowerMac G5 (1.8 KHz, 4 GB RAM) with Tiger (10.5.4) without problems. I think you can go up to FCP 6 with that setup. Of course, it's outdated, but still workable.
Apple hasn't come up with a really, really good up-to-date MacPro to make me leave my old PPC.
