varying codecs

Aloha,
Starting a new project and wanted to get some recommendations. I shoot HDV (sony Z1) -- when I import and attempt to edit -- should I be editing on an HDV timeline? or will I get better results with a different codec? Not clear on the implications... Yeah, yeah, I know I need a new camera -- working on it.


Editing FCP 7, Mac G5 quad, 12 gb ram, lacie 2.5tb raid

Yea, capture native, render out as Prores. Better yet, capture HDV via SDI and RS422 as Prores and edit away.
