Yea, I read about this earlier.

I'll reserve judgement. I've been walking around long enough to remember all the things that were going to kill off the light bulb starting with "standard" fluorescent lamps which insisted on being daylight blue, to adapters so you could make you living room lamps glow like a filling station.

It's getting better. I have several 2700K replacement lamps in the house and if you're careful, they look quite nice and are easy to ignore--but their failure rate is quite high............what?

Yes, people figured out they could shortcut the manufacturing process and customers, seeing a really cheap way to be eco-friendly, snapped them up. And then threw them away as they failed one after the other. I have two desk lamps, one of which has been through three replacement lamps in the time the other is still burning it's original GE standard light bulb.

Don't get me started on dimmers.

I'm currently fighting with an LED maker in Torrance who makes, not only "daylight" LEDs which look nothing like daylight, but also make Tungsten Balanced LEDs which have to be heavily filtered to look like Tungsten.

That article is the first time I saw someone comment on the color of the light.

That's a big deal because humans don't like daylight lamps after dark. They also don't like light in their home that makes them look like they've been dead for six days.

They're odd that way.

Gadgets that do multiple jobs often don't function as well as single-purpose gadgets. I'm not sure I'd want an "illuminating" table in my apartment even if there were one!

No, but (playing revised devil's advocate), you might go for a desk lamp the inside of whose shade glowed. Or a ceiling that glowed in patterns of a sunset?

How about walls that glow as if you had a fireplace--but don't.

Anybody remember Soylent Green?

Who said engineers have no imagination.

Aside from camera top mounted lights, I don't know that these things have enough umph....

I mean there is a big difference in the quality as well as quantity of light that comes from a 5K tungsten fresnel vs a 1K tungsten open face...fall off over a given distance, the look of it...the feel of it...intangibles...and the like. I'd love to have a low heat, high output light source that provides quantity and quality...without a budget busting price afforded by most HMI's.

In the case of LEDs, they will eventually get there. I have some of the earliest LEDs out in the garage. They were very delicate and would blow up with any abuse. They were also very dim, but everyone was fascinated that they lit up at all.

Now, they're being used as stoplights, some effects lighting, and flashlights (electric torches for you otherworlders).

Soylent Green is people!!

I want to see what this glowing white LED does to the flatscreen industry.

[Gadgets that do multiple jobs often don't function as well as single-purpose gadgets. I'm not sure I'd want an "illuminating" table in my apartment even if there were one!]

IMHO, discriminating consumers are now pausing before splurging on single-function gadgets. The days of Batman's utility belt are over. We need more muscle from smaller devices. The iPod just proves the point. People justify the purchase by thinking "well, it's a hard drive, it's a calendar and contacts thing.... I'll buy it!" Well... I sure did! LOL. But it was only a Shuffle. Cheap.

I wish the Nano were everything it is, plus an FM receiver and voice recorder. THEN I'd splurge. But still no cel phone integration!

Presently, the closest thing to a decent multifunction device is the Treo 650.

Multifuction, minimal design, less clutter, no utility belt. That's the near future.

But Luxeon appears to be unrelated to the quantum dot technology Bowers invented. Guess there are lots of ways to tweak LED's.

How do the Marina Micro LED lights work?
I am looking for a good little night light for my fish, I was thinking about getting the Marina Micro LED light set. But I am a little confused. When I go into the store I see something called the "Hub" you have to purchase and then I see the lights. So does this mean that it requires you to purchase two separate things? Or when you purchase the hub do you get 1 light that comes with it? Also, about how long would you say that LED lights have a life of?

Oops, I didn't see this was a 2005 strand. Indeed the nanocrystals did not replace the phosphors.
