Canvas goes white when I pause scrubber in timeline

I have FCP 7.0.3 on an iMac (OS X 10.7.4). Been working on a documentary for months without a problem but yesterday something strange happened. When I pause the scrubber bar the canvas screen goes completely white while it sits there. Once I resume playing the image is fine but every time it stops the canvas screen goes white. Also, when I manually run the scrubber bar back and forth the canvas remains white and a black X appears in the upper right had corner.

I must've clicked something by accident but can't figure out what. I've rebooted the system and refreshed A/V devices but the canvas still remains white. Any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

Go to the Canvas window, click and hold on the third oval button and choose "RGB" rather than "Alpha".
