Does Media Manager do anything to audio?

Does Media Manager do anything to audio?

Deleting unused portions of video with the Media Manager makes archiving much lighter. AFAIKS, audio is untouched and passed onto the backup directory. Did I miss something? Perhaps the media manager thinks that throwing away some audio won't recover much disk space?

Thanks,
Stefan

Nope. Trimming via MM doesn't seem to work with wav files. My guess is that it only trims QT files.

And yea, here you go:

Quote
The Media Manager supports most media file formats, including:

QuickTime movie files: All Media Manager operations are supported for QuickTime movie files with timecode tracks. Video, audio, and timecode tracks are maintained when possible. Media trimming is supported.

Still-image files: Still-image files can be copied and moved in their native format.

AIFF, WAVE, and BWF files: These files can be moved and copied but they cannot be trimmed.

Soundtrack Pro Audio Project files and Motion projects: The Media Manager can move and copy these files, but trimming is not supported. Any media referred to by these project files is not moved or copied.

yeah, the file has to have a TC track.

if you exported some audio from a timeline, THAT would have a TC track,
and it would be trimmed if you ran it though MM.

"media referred to by [Motion & STP] project files is not moved or copied."
interesting, i didn't know that.

Thanks for the insight. Kind of a strange anti-feature considering that it's implemented in Logic. BWF may not have time code (not really sure), but it does have a time stamp, as such it would be easy to do (at least if FCP would still be a live product ;-))

Since trimming audio saves you barely any drive space, I'd say it's actually a pretty logical thing. Probably even more logical, however, if there were an option to let the user decide what to do with the audio, rather than automatic assumptions.

i second that!

it would be a space saver for sure, since my dialog recorder runs continuously so i end up with a recording of 30 minutes or more sometimes and only need a couple of sentences. ah well....

Well, FCP is an old software, and it was designed to work with the QT container, I wasn't too surprised with that omission.

if media doesn't have a correct TimeCode track, then then re-conecting to it after it had been broken into smaller pieces would be almost impossible for FCP.

still, OMF's work passing truncated audio from FCP to DAWs

of course they don't have the option of using the existing media.

i always thought that FCP's reasoning was that if media did NOT have a TC track, then it did not come from a camera, and therefor it maybe the only instance of that media in the world,
so chopping it up into smaller pieces was not a good thing to do.
