separeted audio channels

I've been asked to deliver my final editing file in separated audio channels, like left for ambient sound and right for music.
I have never done it before and I cannot find it in forums & google. Is that so easy that I'm missing something?
Can you give me a clue on how to do that?

Are you sure it's just left and right? If so, just use the 'pan' controls to send to the left or right. If you actually need to deliver more than two tracks (like an M&E mix) it's a bit more complicated.

Yea, those don't sound like network specs. Usually it's full mix on 1&2, M&E on 3 and nat sound on 4, with variations to the specs. Basically make sure you mix down the entire sequence. You can export each audio track from FCP first as aiff files, then set your sequence settings (audio), and set to 4 track outputs (or whatever), then right click on the track panes in the timeline to map each track.

either way, i don't think panning your audio is the best approach.
it's actually a bit of a bother to do, and even worse if you want to go back.

the answer, for me, is to use your sequence's Audio Outputs controls.

open you sequence settings, go to the Audio Outputs pane.
for 2 tracks only, change form stereo to dual mono
for more than 2 tracks, simply add more tracks.

next, back in your timeline, control or right click on or near the lock icons on the left of the timeline
you will find you can allocate your audio outputs to which ever track/s you need.

so you are not modifying your clips, just the output of the sequence.

as you allocate the outputs, i'd suggest double checking, as there is no visual indication at all.
i also solo groups of tracks which are supposed to be allocated to certain outputs, and spot check, looking at the meters.
(for more than 2 tracks you need to open the audio mixer tool)

hope that helps,
nick

Hi, thanks for following my topic.

Jude, for this delivery I just need two tracks, left and right.
But I have 6 tracks in the timeline
On the audio seq settings I have stereo 2 channels output
I changed pan left for the off and all the others for the right. Then mixdown audio.
Created a DV pal AVi file but audio channels are still not separated.

Strypes didn't get why should I export each audio track as aiff files?
When you say right click on the track panes in the timeline, where exactly do I have to click?
I change the pan in the viewer or in the audio mixer...

yeah nick, I think I've got it now!
as I was sure that had to be stereo that was the mistake
that was a great help!
I'm going to make the file, I hope this time is ok!
thanks to all

I mean what Nick said. Right Click on an empty space on the track to set the track.

for years now i've set up my final edit timelines with dialogue being sent to A1+A2,
FX going to A3+4,
and music to A5+6

makes for easy deliverables to sound team & musicians, who can choose what they need and don't need to listen to.

(sigh) i believe that this is not possible in Avid?

You can export multichannel quicktimes from Avid. Do audio mixdowns, then set audio to direct out and export a Quicktime. It used to only do reference quicktimes, but it does multichannel self contained quicktime files in MC6.
