Graphics card for 2009 mac pro

I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card for my MacPro 4,1 2009. I was looking at the Nvidia GTX680 with 2GB of VRAM or the AMD 7950 with 3 gb of VRAM. I primarily use FCP 7 but will also be using FCP X and occasionally After Effects. The AMD has more ram and is almost $200 cheaper. Both are listed on OWC as being compatible with my system. Any advice?

I'm researching this too. Some cards are "flashed" by a third party for Mac compatibility. Some cards require you configure an ugly extra-power solution. Both these give me the heebie jeebies.

Some cards are limited to higher OSX versions, check that, because if you have a system with a range of boot volumes, which allows testing upgrades without disturbing known working solutions, it's a good way to check what card behaves with all of them or just some of them.

Ben King has some experience testing some of these, perhaps he'll chime in.

And if you install the 680, we want to hear all about it!
