Upgrading from 10.6.8 to use USB 3.0 expansion. Risks? Reccomendations?

My sytem:

MacPro5,1
Quad-Core Intel Xeon
2.8 GHz
10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)

I just installed a USB 3.0 expansion card (Inateck PCIe) so I can run a USB 3.0 external drive with all of the media I need to access on FCP 7. Now I need to upgrade at least to 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion). I'm concerned about compatibility issues. Should I jump straight to Mavericks? I understand FCP7 and Mavericks aren't compatible but mostly people aren't reporting issues. Is an upgrade to Lion the safest bet?

Thanks for the help!

Jay

I have run FCP7 on Mavericks and it was fine. It was a fresh machine with a fresh install though, so YMMV.

Mavericks hasn't been much of an issue, but for what I know, Mountain Lion was extremely stable with fcp7.
