Audio distorts/crackles when played in timeline, fine in QT & FCP clip mode

Hi

Perplexing audio conundrum:

I am importing audio using a USB Zoom HRn recorder/mic (http://www.zoom.co.jp) . Tracks are recorded in WAV 48kHz 16 bit Stereo, which matches the sequence settings. Have also tried recording directly into FCP from the mic using VO tool.

The audio clips play fine in QT and when I play them straight from the bin, but when I bring them into the timeline, they sound like there is a bad connection, like electrical shorting, fritzing intermittently. The noise/distortion does not correspond to anything in the actual track (e.g. peak audio), it's completely random.

Something in settings? Audio visual set-up?

Thanks in advance.

weird.

i was first going to suggest that maybe the master audio level of that particular sequence was too high (check in the audio mixer)
but it wouldn't really create the effects you describe

have you tried more than one sequence?
maybe there's a corruption i the one you are using
or try another project?

trashing FCP preferences might work.

Thanks Nick!

As it happens, this is one of those problems that vanishes without any apparent solution being responsible. I accidentally restarted the computer and when I went back to the timeline, the audio is fine. I'll keep this open in case it returns. It is a weird problem. Perhaps Friday the 13th gremlins.
