timecode jump

hey guys,

just a question about something i noticed.

here are a few of my settings for reference:
sequence: Kona2 525 29.97
playback: " "

I am editing a sequence and i have notice a leap in my timecode....
1:01:59;29 (00:01:59;29), the time code will jump to 1:02:00;02 (00:02:00;02).

and will continue in 2min intervals.

Now this happens at every sequence i have created, since i notice this.

Is there a reason for the passing of these unnoticed 2 frames?(a pulldown possibly)
Or, is this just an anomaly?

thanks for your help

This is called "drop frame" timecode for exactly that reason - it drops frames in the timecode at regular intervals, as you have discovered. It accounts for the difference between 30 fps and 29.97 fps, and is a method for keeping the clock time in synch withthe timecode time. Perfectly normal. There are complex explanations for all this that I can refer you to if you want.

thanx Scott

well sh*t,

I could have sworn i have been in Non-Drop frame mode.

This could be a prob.

Could you specify where you switch from non-drop to drop
(i thought it was the RT and Safe RT) but i guess i was mistaken.

thanks

wow,

I sure am glad there is no Bar for Editors, i would have definitely ben dismembered for that last comment.

"Because Real-Time playback has everything to do with drop frames."

Please restrict all knowledge of this post from you memory.

thanks again.

Drop/Non Drop is a sequence setting. Click on the timeline and hit command-0(zero)

It is probably not as big a problem as you might think unless you have already based all your timings on sequence timecode. That is a big "unless" now that I think about it.

Do a quick read-up on timecode when you get the chance because so many problems stem from timecode, and can be solved by knowing what's going on at all the various frame rates.
A good test of someones basic knowledge of TC is asking them why FCP has a column for frame rate and timecode rate.
