AJA Kona 3, now available for PCI-X Macs...the Kona 3X. Now the ability to upconvert SD to HD, and cross convert 720p to 1080p is doable on the older PCI-X G5's.

I am SO there....

It's $1000 more than the Kona LH ... Do you think it's worth it? What is the added functionality? The upconverting?

Upconvert SD to HD in real time...cross convert 720p to 1080p in real time. No other card does that. None.

In fact, to upconvert SD to HD you generally need to run your footage thru a Terranex box at a post facility.

WELL worth it.

Was this JUST released? I thought it had been out awhile? Or was that just the PCI-e?

The PCIe version has been out for a while. This is the PCI-X version. it replaces the Kona 2 which is no longer offered.

What might be the limitation of running this card in a PCI-X vs PCI-e slot?

Well, the Kona 3X will not fit in a PCIe slot...for one.

(hee..sorry)

They look to be identical...the page lists them both and has the same capabilities. So...Guessing no limitations. Just the connection type.

News about the card has been poking its head around the net during the past day.

It's on their website. Not sure if it was added late to the mailinglist from Lafcpug News but its in that as well.

In any event it is great news for shops with G5s that need to up and down convert between HD and SD. I would suspect the RT processing is better as well but we'll have to wait for the bakeoffs to find out.
