LAFCPUG.ORG Moving to a new server
June 03, 2007 09:47AM
Hi everyone:
This is a note to let you know that I have started to migrate the LAFCPUG web site to a brand new Quad Xeon Xserve. This server ought to be four times faster than the single G5 Xserve the site is currently running on, so searching the forum ought to be much faster.

HOWEVER it takes some time for everyone to get on the new site, so if you post on the old site your post might disappear as everyone starts to get directed to the new one.

THIS POST is on the NEW SERVER. One reason I am making it is as a "bookmark," so Michael and I can try to move the posts that come in after the transition.

Regards,
Daniel Sofer

If the service is active now, then yes, I did notice we're missing that annoying wait state between the time you press the button and anything actually happens.

If it got any worse, I was going to complain to Horton. I would have done it earlier, but he always tells me to trash my cookies and go lie down for a while.

trash my cookies and go lie down for a while.

Hehe, good advice... I'll have to remember that :-)

Koz, seems like most people have been on the new box all day, and it's not even breaking a sweat... I'm happy.

Hey Daniel - it's a lot faster here too. Nice! I have noticed this morning that a few posts I got through email from the Color Forum have not appeared on the Color Forum though. Just thought I'd let you know - it was two posts by Graeme Natress - one of them was supposed to be here :
h ttp://www.lafcpug.org/phorum/read.php?15,177742,178534#msg-178534 an the other here : h ttp://www.lafcpug.org/phorum/read.php?15,178345,178532#msg-178532.

(I broke the http on purpose so you could see the path - actually going to the addresses shows an error.)

This "lost post" issue is what I was referring to at the top of this thread:

- You make a post (on the old server)
- You go off for a couple of hours, meanwhile your Name Server (DNS) has updated to the new server address.
- You go back on the site, only now you are on the new site not the old one, and your post is missing.

You won't really be able to tell which server you're on, but by now (24hours later) I expect everyone is on the new server.

It might be simplest if you re-post on the new server...

The emails are another issue, I'll take a look and see what I can find out.

Thanks,
Daniel

Hi All:
Fixed a server email config issue (new server and the default settings were getting all the emails bounced).

Emails should be working now.

That would explain why some threads that I know I read last night are showing up as "new" today. Ah so.... I love things that can be explained.

Server changes are never an easy thing and thanks to Daniel Sofer it was easier than usual. There are still some folks struggling to get into the new server and it will sort itself out in a day or so but the fast way is a simple restart of your Mac or shut down your mac, unplug your cable or DSL modem, plug it back in again and then start up.
