I've heard you can use FCP 6 and Unity. Is this true? And if so, where can I find out more info on this?

One guy's perspective:

Our facility is "trying" to use a recycled Unity (PC) with 5 stations in the Graphics Department (Macs - one of them is a FCP station) & there are all kinds of problems. Loads of Fiber network kernal panics / beach balls / inability to collect After Effects projects / 2 gig file limits / etc.

I have requested to be left OFF the Fiber network as I am not fond of kernal panics. I don't have any negative issues at all & I am the only box in my room that does never crashes (knocking wood now).

The Xserve RAID / Xsan set-up I had suggested was too much $$$ for them & they didn't believe that set-up could handle Uncompressed 10-Bit HD. Operations is feeling that now, I think.

Do (Does?) AVID even advertise UNITY for anything other than serving video to their editing products? Did they ever?
I have only ever used UNITY on multi editor shows with all AVID products.

I love when the penny drops on the bean counters and the naysayers. It's a selfish but satisfying feeling to have to resist saying I told you so.

Avid would open an artery before they did that. Our Unity is a little Avid Island in the middle of a company of mixed services.

OMG! [gasping for breath].

Please note the little star on the bottom.

Also I believe they get you with the User License Fees. This isn't like a nice community hard drive.

Nice. What the hell is this supposed to mean:
"Unknown high-level co-existence with Mac OS X (iTunes Music Library, Doc, OS-user values)"?

See my post regarding "kernal panics". Not a happy union. Cheaper doesn't always equal better especially in this case.

Correct me if I'm wrong Joe but "recycled Unity" sounds like old hardware/software. Like before Avid's NAB2007 announcement of FCP support on Unity.

I should clarify. Our reseller (nameless for fear of reprisals), rather than lose the sale of our original Xserve / Xsan proposal (mega-$$$ - too much to spend for the brass), offered up a Unity system that they had in stock. It was being used for another purpose - but it's still new.

It $ucks$. All our Creative Services FCP Stations (6) are not on Fiber because of the problems. We are looking into either a private XSan set-up for our stations or operations is looking into an ISIS set-up for everybody.

It's like the friggin' Keystone Cops around here.

Martin,
Anyone you know running FCP on Unity? We are running out of Xserve RAID storage rapidly and the company I am supporting wants to use spare space on Unity. I know...KLUDGE.

Kevin,

If you ONLY want to repurpose their storage, that's a different issue. X-SAN WILL work with NON apple storage... you just have to work harder to set it up. This is a much different issue than trying to "hang FCP" off of a Unity.

I'd suggest rephrasing the question: What do I have to do to connect non APPLE storage to an X-SAN?

Good luck.

Hey Mark - how much storage do you have on your SAN? I know someone who is whining that FCP can't cope with larger drives and lots of information. I personally know a 14TB setup, but I figure yours is bigger.

We're at 50 terrabytes split between two separate X-SANs.

Tell them to stop their whining at start thinking about story!

Heh. I told the guy dealing with them I wanted to come over and punch them personally. They have a list as long as your arm of things you 'can't do with FCP' that he is having to debunk. Thanks for the info.
