ProRes422 "standard" vs HQPosted by Jay W.
I have a long form (2 hr) documentary to edit in August and am doing some calculating to see how much drive space I'll need.
Material will be shot in XDCam, and edited using ProRes 422. Does anyone have any "real world" experience using ProRes "standard" vs "HQ"? I'm expecting maybe 20 hours (or more) of material, and the standard codec takes up less space than the HQ (though not a huge amount). I was wondering if the HQ codec is worth the extra disc space or if the standard would suffice. I'll be delivering 1080i and SD masters. Thanks for the bandwidth. Jay Wilson KTLA
I haven't seen them to compare them yet, but you'd think there's gotta be more info, since ProRes422 standard is 18 mb/s and HQ is 22 mb/s.

This is not a comparison between Cineform and ProRes:
Cineform has a a Medium Quality and a High Quality setting much the same way that ProRes does. I used to use Cineform HQ all the time even though support kept telling me that since I was writing out to film I didn't need to. I believe ProRes lower quality is 145Mb/s and Sony SR is 140Mb/s. If your not mastering to film I think you'll find the medium quality is more than enough and will take up less drive space and be easier to edit. Just a thought.
