Spliting Audio

Hi,

I need to split the audio on my timeline so all VO is on left speaker and all music and other stuff is on the right speaker. Is there a fast and easy way to do this?
Using FCP 5.0.4

Thanks,

Justin

yes.

first you need to isolate all the VO to it's own track, or set of tracks.

then open your sequence settings (Seq Menu > Settings, or apple zero)
go to Audio Outputs

change from stereo to dual mono

back in the timeline,
right or control click on or near the lock icon on the left of your timeline,
set all the VO tracks to audio outputs > 1
set all the OTHER tracks to audio outputs > 2

double check this.
there is no visual indication AT ALL of your audio output settings.

Change the PAN setting on one of your VO clips so that it's playing from the left speaker, then COPY it. Select all your other VO clips and do a Paste Attributes; only select PAN under audio and hit OK. Then do the same with your other audio clips but PAN that first clip to the right this time.

Panning is not a great solution,
as there may well be STERO clips in the timeline.

changing the panning on these simply reverses the left-right image.
you'd have to go thru your timeline, FIND all the stereo clips, UN-STEREO them, (option L)
then alter the panning.

too hard.
ESPECIALLY if this panning is for a one-off version for a composer, or sound editor or whatever.

while we're on the subject, there is a simpler way to pan a group of clips:
select them all,
Control , = pan left
Control . = pan centre
Control / = pan right

nevertheless the "Audio Outputs" approach is the safest and simplest method in this case, IMO.

Ah you're right. Was thinking about my own current project which has mono tracks...
