Caldigit SATA RAID card conflict, G5

Hi all,

Just got my new Burly 8-bay RAID and Caldigit PCI-X card in the mail today. Everything went together fine, but when I try and start up the computer, the monitors don't turn on.

Removing the Caldigit card cures the problem, the machine boots without issue.

I have removed the other cards (the old fiber channel card that controlled the IDE RAID, and the AJA KONA 3x), the only cards left are the video card (in slot 1) and the Caldigit card -- still no dice.

This happens even with no SATA drives plugged into the card.

Any thoughts on what's going on here? I'm working on a dual 2.0 G5.

Thanks,

-MW

I thought Caldigit only sells their cards to work with their drives? They don't?

Uhh... I ordered them on the same invoice, and the Macgurus guys are really helpful with stuff like that. I assume that they'd have said something.

Regardless, the computer won't boot even with just the card installed, and no drives.

But I will investigate the incompatibility issue in the morning. That would be a bummer.

MacGurus...ProMax...others sell the CalDigit cards with their eSATA enclosures.

Could be a bad card. Call caldigit or MacGurus and get a replacement.

I called MacGurus, and they suggested that it might be bad. I always try and avoid that, it's the wussie way out. :-)

I'll try and test it on a PC tomorrow, and see if it boots.

I like your approach Mike. If it works in the PC though you might have a real problem on your hands -- a card that "from appearances sake" isn't bad but won't work in your Mac.

At least the vendor has come forward and said it might be bad so you have a viable return/exchange option.

Back to troubleshooting this morning.

When I turn on the G5 with the CalDigit card in it, either the computer doesn't boot, or the computer does boot but the monitors don't work.

Anyone have any ideas on how I could tell which one is happening?

Try zapping your PRAM by holding down "Command-Option and the "P" "R" keys immeidately after you hit the power button on your machine. Might even want to disconnect your second monitor so simplify the setup for the machine.

Ok, the Caldigit card boots and installs on a different G5.

The only difference at this point is the graphics card. So I pull the graphics card on the other G5, and swap them. The Caldigit card still won't boot on my edit machine.

I zapped the PRAM. I hadn't thought of that, but it didn't work.

All one has to do is contact our technical support at 714-572-9889 & we'll square you away.

Mike Horton, we do sell our cards separate to companies like MacGurus for use with their products as well as with our own products.

Also, Promax, uses our FASTA-4e (PCIe) or FASTA-4x (PCIx) card inside every turn-key MacPro/SATAMAX system they sell.

My bad Jon. I thought you sold the cards only with your drives. Thanks for checking in and setting me straight. I am now officially educated.

Mike,

Makeup? Do you really think I need it? (j/k)

The crew won't be wearing the neon green polo, nor the orange. We've upgraded our attire to cool new (low key) navy polos that even Shane may want to wear after hours......Ha!

Damn! Had my camera's white balance set and everything. Oh well. Hope there is at least a neon green logo.

Great...I am amassing a pile of CalDigit shirts.

What am I to do with the Orange and Green ones?

eBay?

The Orange ones had one benefit...I saw myself on a video podcast walking around.

Last I heard they were collector items. Worth thousands. Just don't wear them in front of anyone with Epilepsy.

CalDigit got me a new card this morning, works no problem. Sent them back the RMA'd card.

Personally, I'm just glad I could spur this heartwarming reunion about IBC.
