Tri-Sync issues in Kona to HDCAM layoffs

For Standard Def combinations we use our our house blackburst as ref
For High Def we use our Evertz Tri-Sync box set to the proper ref frequency
In every scenario (except one) we sync to these and everything is fine.
Any standard def combination works fine.
HDCAM to HDCAM works fine.
SD to HD upconvert from deck to converter to deck works fine.
HD to SD downconvert from deck to converter to deck works fine.
SD and HD capture to Final cut works fine via a KONA LH
SD Kona output to our decks work fine.
SD or HD Kona straight out to a monitor works fine.

The only scenario that is not working for us is HD Final Cut/Kona LH to an HDCAM recorder.
In this case in order to have it sync properly, we have to switch the servo ref to input video rather than external. In this and all scenarios we are feeding the Kona card and the decks the proper flavor of reference for the fomat.

Any Ideas?

In case anyone is keeping score, this will answer my own question:

I found info in an AJA White paper about using an F500 HDCAM with Kona cards. The principle at least seems to apply to our SRW-5500 HDCAM too.

Quoted from an AJA white paper:

"Servo Ref Or Signal For Output/input: When you are digitizing, the single most important thing to remember is that the servo ref should be set to auto. . .When you are outputting, the servo ref should be set to input. If you do make a mistake in this setting or in the capstan lock setting, your digitized video will have shifts in the color frequency, usually to a blue streaking pattern. Audio can also be muted if the settings are incorrect.""
