Problem recording HDV

I am on FCP Studio 2 and have a 2-1/2 hour show that I am trying to record onto a DV CAM tape using a Sony HVR M25U deck via firewire. I have a G5 dual 2.5.

My video is mixed down to an HDV QT and the audio is an AIFF. When I play the QT in my timeline, I have no problems.

When my show gets to around 50 minutes, it freezes both video and audio for a couple of seconds and then picks up. It continues like this at different points after that.

But then, when it's almost to the end of the show, the picture completely freezes video and audio but now the timecode completely drops out and it never picks up again.

Help! I have attempted to lay this show to tape 7 times with the same result. I have tried different decks and different computers and different versions of FCP (5.1). It's the same each time.

Right now I am in the process of making another QT and am including the audio and not making an AIFF. I am also putting it on another drive.

Any other suggestions if this doesn't work? I'm out of options.

Is the QT movie on your desktop? That's a no no.

No, the QT is on an external drive. Only my FCP project is on the desktop.

The external is daisy-chained with other drives though.

I'm glad you told me QT shouldn't be on the desktop. That was going to be my next test!

Any other suggestions?

well, actually,
if your drives are dropping frames,
(and my guess is the problem lies in your drive)
then playing back off the internal drive (the desktop) is a viable option.

exporting the file to another external drive is probably the best option,
but i have had perfect un-interupted playback of 110minute DV files from my laptop.

You're trying to record HDV, right?

Correct, HDV. Sequence is HDV, QT made for HDV, Video Output, etc. set to HDV and HDV Basic Firewire.

I just tried laying the new QT to tape again. This time, it got all the way through EXCEPT FOR THE LAST 10 MINUTES! Ugh!

I'm making a new QT of just the part that failed and replace the that part and try again.

I can try the other internal drive, not my hard drive and see if that works.

The external is daisy-chained with other drives though.

My guess is that is the problem. Make it a selfcontained movie and play it from an internal drive.

I just did that! It still freezing during the last 10 minutes of the show. Now what?

"Now what?"

question the decision to master out to HDV.

why are you doing this?
who asked for it?
why do they want it in that format?

can you deliver in 2 parts?

Good idea about the 2 parts! Think I can do that.

The client wants it - they plan on releasing an HD version of this movie, so gotta do it.

maybe switch the order of the daisy chain? Like the drive you have the media on connect that one to the tower?

just guessing really

i'd say that HDV is not really a delivery format,
so getting the film back onto HDV tape is really just a temporary measure.

the 2 part idea will make life easier.

i'd also suggest you/they keep a copy of the file you are attempting to export.

i'd ALSO suggest that maybe you export your HDV sequence as something else, like ProRes,
but that might be worth another post,
to get some feedback from more experienced HD users.
