Upgrading to FCS 2

I have a copy of FCP 1.2.5 that is a Not for Resale version, which of course you can't upgrade. I was, however, told by an apple store employee that serial numbers of these early versions of FCP didn't differentiate between NFR and standard versions of the program which means that despite the fact that the box says NFR I may be able to upgrade the program anyways.

My question is this: How can I tell if a serial number is NFR of standard?

You can't. He's right though there were no NFRs in 1.2.5, there was only the full retail version. At least there was nothing that distinguished them in the splash screen. It's possible in the Apple data base there is something that lists which serial numbers were distributed as NFRs, but I doubt it.
