this may be old news to you MacPro users,
but here it is anyway:

"If you?re lucky enough to have a MacPro, Quad or Octo, you?re probably not taking advantage of its real processing power....."

Nick, I saw that article and tried it -- Compressor has never been faster! I've been encoding MPEG-2 files for DVD in better than real time performance: 90 minute programs have been encoding in about 70-80 minutes, and that's dual-pass. Compared to the regular cluster process I can see all 4 cores running at near maximum instead of 50% or so...

Only issue I've had was when I tried to make an H.264 file with Timecode burn and the Virtual Cluster rejected it. Seemed like it took issue with adding a filter (the TCG) for some reason.

pitty.
i wont need that too much, though, i hope.
is that the only filter you've tried?

I set it up as instructed on the 8 core 8GB RAM machine I use at work. I tried to export from compressor using the cluster setup and continued to get the following message.

Status: Failed - HOST [Josh.local] Final Cut Pro generated an error or unexpectedly quitUser aborted Media Server.

I wasn't sure if I am doing something incorrect or possibly there is a problem with one or more of the processors. The machine is only two months old. Thanks for any and all help and I'm very happy I found this forum. Full of great info. Thanks!

Did you Export to Compressor from within Final Cut? I don't know if that's the issue but I've been exporting SCQT movies first and then dropping those into Compressor.

Well funny you should bring that up. I got one out through the FC timeline and one as a SCQT. It seems to work sometimes and then other times it just decides it doesn't want to do it. Downloaded a widget to watch the processors. You can see a significant difference and it is quite fantastic. Gonna keep doing the SCQT way as you mentioned. Thanks.

Hey I am not trying to take any sort of credit for the acronym. I was just excited about getting all the processors to work and now we've tumbled down this road of abbreviations. But yes....I will use SCQT when the moment is just right. Maybe we should now use it with this...SCQT?. I cannot pay for royalties on this. I just can't. I am only a poor editor.

It's okay, I won't demand residuals.

But if I start seeing SCQT t-shirts at LAFCPUG meetings I'm going to get pissed winking smiley

Greetings,

I don't know if anyone had this grunt before, but, Compressor
crashes at each attempt to use after an upgrade on my
Mac G4.

What to do?

Start a new thread Jiivanii. And re-install Compressor.

I will have to investigate the new thread start.
I have reinstalled compressor a hundred times with and without the upgrade from the original disk. Including removing the ProApps FCP file and to no avail.
