error message "insufficient content for edit" when adding transitions
November 07, 2007 12:20PM
When I try to add a transition to any edit I get the message "insufficient content for edit." Doesn't make sense because this is occurring everywhere, even at edit points that are referencing the middle of a master clip.

Any ideas for fixes.

So handles aren't the issue?

If you're dead sure you have handles on the clips, then check to make sure you didn't turn off Snapping. If you have one-frame clip fragments trapped in an edit, or two clips are one frame apart instead of flush against each other, application of transitions will be hindered. You may not be able to see these issues if you're zoomed out too far in the timeline.

Nope. Handles aren't an issue and this is occurring on all edit points in every sequence, no matter the edit location in the source file.

You sure? Open a clip in the viewer and check where the in and out points are. If it is happening on every clip then trash your preferences

Trashed my prefs and am still having the same issue.

you would "insufficient content for edit" warning when you are doing an EDIT.

so are you attempting a "with transition" edit?

maybe you just need to clear you in/outs from the timeline?

Nope. I cannot add a transition, to an audio edit for instance, anywhere. There's plenty of outgoing and incoming media for the transition, but FCP won't allow it. This started a few days ago. Not sure why.

how are you applying the transition?

i wonder if you might have a transition duration that's wildly long?
like one hour or something?

but then you trashed your prefs, so they would go back to one second.

Standard cross fade of one second. Won't do it. Trashed prefs. Re-launched

Here's an oddity:
It allows me to add the cross fade from the pull-down menu, but not with a keyboard stroke.

check your keyboard layout?

but if you trashed prefs, it should be default:
Apple T for trans,
Option Apple t for Audio trans

can you drag and drop from the effects tab of the browser?

Sure I could do that, but I prefer to use the keyboard. Weird, huh?

not weird at all... keyboard rocks!
but my question was DOES IT WORK?

the thing is as i said early on "insufficient Content" is an EDIT waning.
i cant remember if i've gotten that from applying a TRANSITION.

so it may not be a TRANSITION issue.
something may be messing with your keyboard functionality.

Right. I meant to say, weird that this error is occurring. Is there any way to trash keyboard prefs or some way to clear up this issue?

Could you post the project file somewhere. Maybe with just one sequence with a couple of clips that don't allow the transition. Don't need the media, just the project file.

sure is weird
not sure how to fix it.

so anyway other than the keyboard works?
(effects menu, drag from browser, right click on edit + "Add transition"?)

have you notice any other weird KB behaviour?

1st port of call would be to look at your FCP keyboard layout.
Option H should bring that up,
otherwise Tools Menu > Keyboard Layout > Customise

you can reset that with the buttons lower right.
re-set will reset the defaults,
but also leave behind any custom settings that didn't interfere with the defaults.
(like if you had "Apple P" mapped to something)

for a TOTAL re-set, 1st use the CLEAR button, then the RE-SET

then check your system preferences.
try Key Board & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts.
or International

although i 'm not sure what you'd be looking for.

good luck,

Thanks. Tried both steps:

Reset my keyboard to defaults.
Then, in System Prefs, Keyboard & Mouse, I restored defaults.

Still, no dice.

Actually I just tested it and the 'insufficent content for edit' warning does come up if there's no room for a transition. I thought it said something different too - and it's not very intuitive, but there you go.

When you're trashing your prefs, are you using a stored copy to replace the dumped set? How do you trash your prefs?

ok.
i should know that, shouldnt i?
i think i;ve reached saturation point and am starting to forget stuff i used to know.

like Glen Campbell "I think I need a small vacation"

i think i'm correct in saying that John CAN ad transitions,
but NOT via the keyboard shortcut.

Yeah that's what I'm hearing. Keyboard shortcut broken.

ok, map the shortcut to another key.

then take it off Apple T, and map it BACK to Apple T.

i dunno, hit the side of your computer really hard?

Are you actually selecting the edit point before you press Cmd-T or are you just putting the playhead there? Cmd-T won't work if you just have the playhead the edit point as the video track isn't autoselected. But that doesn't explain the error message. Very weird.
audio transition not highlighted in effects tab

all of a sudden, I can't add audio tranisitons. when I go to Effects, neither transition is highlighted. any idea?

Have you seen Glen Campbell's mug shot on the internet? He looks like he's ALWAYS on vacation smiling bouncing smiley

Regarding the transitions...have you tried pulling one down from the effect window & dropping it on the edit?

When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.

That is a grizzly, life weary, haggard, most certainly troubled - a man with a dark secret that has been a burden to him for many years, no longer the rhinestone cowboy. That is truly shocking. I though Nick Nolty looked bad when he had a mug shot taken for drunk driving offences but Glen looks an unhappy man.
