O.T. New MonitorsPosted by Barry
Hi All, I am trying to upgrade to a new macpro desktop computer and almost forgot about monitors . I am currently running a pair of Apple 17" ADCs with my G4 Quicksilver. The Apple 20" flat panels seem a little expensive. I rembember a lot of love being given to Dell's a couple of years ago. My question is ...What would be a good monitor to use in dual monitor FCP edit system. Thanx Barry
The Dell's are less expensive, and similar to the Apple monitors. The 24's are a nice balance between size and cost, especially when buying two.
I use a 20" and a 24" for one of my machines, and it works pretty well for me. Folks with a few bucks more than I do use the 30" -- it's a real status symbol. EDITED BY MODERATOR You might have trouble loading them in your Hummer, especially when it's parked in that handicapped spot.
However the Dells are not as good as the ACDs for moving images and colour reproduction...
At least for the 30" models - CNET Review of them here: [reviews.cnet.com] I've found this to be true in my experience of the 23" ACD vs 24" Dells too... You generally pay for quality. Shame its SO much more expensive or I'd buy a 2nd 30" to make up for my large car/small feet syndrome For instant answers to more than one hundred common FCP questions, check out the LAFCPUG FAQ Wiki here : [www.lafcpug.org]
Man, I come up with something funny to say in the forum twice a year, and wouldntcha know, it gets censored by the man. Sigh. :-)
Yeah Mike, our graphic designer uses a 20" as a second monitor for his MBP. I've not used one side-by-side with the 24's, but they're similar. The shame is that it is (or was) about the same price as the 22". The 20", as I recall, has more inputs (USB, built-in card reader). Ben, I work with a freelance graphic designer who uses a 30" ACD. When he bought it he was so thrilled with it, but now everytime I drop by his place he's whining about how he needs another -- more desktop real estate. I'm concerned his wife's going to leave him, if his feet are really that small. :-)
Woah your GFX guy must have a "serious toe infection" or something; maybe its just a bout of "Athletes foot" (but being a Designer I doubt it) or maybe he's been "playing footsie" under his desk with the secretary, who knows...
Personally I just want another 30" to balance out the room and I can't be doing with the black plastic Dells now I've gone all Aluminium and Spotty! So to take this OT topic even more OT have you decided on a quote yet Mike?

And as a carry over from a thread two chapters ago, there was a posting from someone (somewhere else) who had both Dell and Apple versions of the same panel and he said the differences were visible.
"The Dell was like looking at a computer monitor, the CineDisplay was like looking at a glossy magazine." I still haven't resolved the issue except to go to great pains to bring my glass monitor back to life. This is the Engineering Curse. Nothing is ever allowed to fail. Eventually, I will go down to Santa Monica and give a ACD a good testing. We also need to know that the 20" is not pixel for pixel a match with HiDef. The 23 and up are. Koz
i was the FIRST cool kid with a dell 24! the rest of you just wanna be like me - HAHAHAHAHA! psssht whatever!
and BTW, as im told, 20" monitors cant display full HD res (be they dell untrasharp or whatever) another BTW: i spoke with my cousin last week (whos a dell sales mgr.) and he confirmed that dell is a couple weeks on backorder with the 24 until supply catches up with demand... grrr!~
Did you guys read the latest issue of Creative Cow? Bob Zellin's article on Monitor Calibration name-dropped the Dell 2470WFP as "the absolute cheapest 'very good' quality HD-only monitor... It works just fine"
He doesn't quite come out and say it but it does sound like he's endorsing the Dell (and a video card with YPbPr out) as a good (cheap) HD monitoring solution vs. the more expensive LCDs and glass monitors. What do you guys think? I've been thinking about getting the Matrox MXO and a 2nd 23" ACD but this solution (Dell+AJA card) might actually be better, if I can get fairly accurate color... Iffin you want to get down to it...I was the one that turned ALL of you onto the Dells 2405s and 2407s.
I have two, and an Apple 23", and I like the Dells better. They do black...Apple is a little pink. www.shanerosseditor.com Listen to THE EDIT BAY Podcast on iTunes [itunes.apple.com]
That is right...and Barefeats did an indepth test on that exact issue (which is what confirmed it for me leading to my purchase). Since we're dropping names now...it was Sir Michael Horton, Esquire that turned ME onto my Dell in a Private Message discussion. Thanks Mike!! ...so there When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.

URL? I wonder if we're complaining about the Apple monitor hitting 6500K color temperature accurately and the Dell doesn't? I'm finding some other slippery numbers, too. Yes, panels can achieve contrast ratios approaching glass, but they still can't hit black. So the kinescopes go from rich-velvety black to sparkly white, panels go from almost black to making your eyes hurt. One of the non-video panels I tried at home was on a machine near a window and it didn't matter what time of day I started, I had to turn it down. After I did that, of course, the contrast range went into the gutter because the blacks don't move. I need to hold out long enough to get one of the other panel technologies far enough along. Koz
The original barefeats article I am referring to was posted on May 6th, 2005 and is no longer there. It has since been updated with testing on the newest models of both monitors:
[www.barefeats.com] Here is the quote from the barefeats testing in 2005 that converted me from ACD's at that time:
From a grafix design / color correction POV...the Dell was a no brainer for me (especially for the price which was half that of the ACD). I like my blacks as close to black as possible From an engineering POV...you'll hate them both & will never be satisfied with either. When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.
This is me digging through the data.
<<<From an engineering POV...you'll hate them both & will never be satisfied with either.>>> Well, maybe. I think I mentioned in the other thread that the worst thing that could have happened was my experiment where I had two completely different panels here. One had stunning, lush, excellent, bright, sharp color and the worst motion artifacts and jittering I ever saw. The other one had smooth, eye snapping motion that could carry a football (both kinds) and slow pans with zero trouble, but had ten year old, disappointing, washed-out color. I'm looking for an Ultrasharp to watch--or try. More as we go. Oh, and I'm perfectly willing to write a check for $1000 if I have some assurance that the resulting panel will at least meet me half way. I'm not bottom feeding, but I am watching the progress of SED panels. Koz
OK. Here you go, Joey.
[kozco.com] That's the Wired HiDef clip. See if you can play it without motion problems. It plays here just fine on a ten year old glass monitor and not particularly exciting Mac Mini. Just double click and play in QuickTime Pro--7.3.0 in my case, but it played in the earlier version, too. Ben King couldn't do it without converting it to something else. If you do have jittery, stuttering motion problems, can you imagine watching an entire football game (either version) like that? I just got done watching a recorded Wired Science from earlier this evening at the same time I'm up and downloading this clip, so it's not like I'm straining the Mini. It's all in the display process. Koz
That clip plays fine here on my not-that-exciting Sony SDM-HS95P. I do have a RADEON X1900 video card running these monitors DVI though. That can play a big part.
This is the screen here Be careful though, my other one is a SDM-HS95 without the P and it's nowhere near as good. Also, not widescreen.
Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP
Already I got a bad feeling about this. I'm in the third page of Googles and so far nobody is telling me to send a check and they will send me a monitor. I do see page after page of glowing reviews alternating with pages of people getting burned while trying to buy one. "...while what was actually shipped was a Dell 17...took my information and hung up on me...give up and try to get one off eBay..." And the ever popular, "...should have bought the Apple monitor...great service.." Flee! Flee! Koz
koz,
It plays just fine here in "Present Movie" mode (Full Screen) in QT on my Dell 2405FPW. I do get random jitters when playing it from my boot drive but after moving it over to my G-Raid...no problems. The jittering is NOT a "monitor thing" in my case. I think your making yourself nuts for nothing. I got mine from ebay for $718 a few years back and it's been nothing but perfect for me. The only issue I had was establishing a Warranty because I didn't buy it from Dell (or a reseller) directly. Dell told me that the purchaser gets the warranty and has to transfer it over. It just so happens the guy I bought it from "lost" the original P.O. so there was no proof of purchase to use for transfer. For the price these days, I would definitely go through Dell and get that 3 year warranty documented. When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.
