$5,000 from my dad, which MAC should I upgrade to for HD video?

Hello forum,

This is my first time posting. I'm new to town, but I've been on the South Florida FCP board for a few years and love the community. I seek your advice.

My computer has finally failed me. I've worked it unbelievably though. It's a Powerbook G4 running FCP6, I have two Graid2 drives, and I edit a lot of HD and HDV content.

I plan tp borrow some money from my dad, and I'm trying to make the wisest move to help me work fast. I don't know if I should get a MacBook Pro 17 or a G5. I am often on the move, but I can move a G5. Not sure, what I need to be able to process future work, like After Effects maybe, and what components I would need for an Apple desktop.

Any advice will surely be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The MacBookPro's will be a significant improvement over your Powerbook. If you want mobility, go for it, just don;t expect the power of a tower in your lap.

I almost always buy refurbished from Apple, look for it on the bottom left of their store page..

Refurbished MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
15.4-inch widescreen display
2GB memory
120GB hard drive
6x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
Built-in iSight camera

Thats a beefy laptop for a pretty good discount. They go quickly so just keep an eye out for the one you want...
