O.T. Adding Ram to MacPro

Hi All, Still trying to configure a MacPro for FCP editing, and I am a little confused about adding ram. It was suggested here, not to buy ram from Apple as it is too expensive. I am looking to add 4 gigs and see that there are 2 configurations, 4x 1gig and 2x2gig modules. Considering that the MacPro comes with 1gig of ram (2x512MB), can either of these 4gig configurations be used with (in addition to) the original 1 gig, or will I have to dump the 512MBs? Also, which is the better configuration, the 4 x 1gig or the 2x2gig? Thanx Barry

No, you can keep the original RAM in. There is a very specific sequence to the slots you use for added RAM, so check your documentation. I think there is some cost benefit to going with the denser chips, but the real benefit is that you use fewer slots with denser chips, so you have more expansion room left.
