just for FUN - your industry predictions for 2008

i just thought this might be fun - let's hear from all!

i predict: apple will phase out soundtrackpro and motion (rolling lite versions into a new ilife package). FCP will get a new interface and apple will announce in the 3rdQ that they will abandon hardware development and focus on phone/pod devices

Re: FCP interface UI redesign. Yeah, a LOT of OS 9 stuff still in FCP. I believe you are right and we will see an interface that looks like the current Log and Capture window for HDV and the Log and Transfer window -- those are the new look and much more "OS X Pro App like".

Here are more predictions: XDCAM-HD and XDCAM-HD EX will become major major popular shooting formats and leave HDV for the "under $3000" camera market.

Panasonic will announce a new HVX-like camera with sharpness that is closer to 1000 lines rather than the current 500 lines to compete with the new Sony.

A focus on HD monitoring solutions will happen as more editors decide to stop using downconverted images for editing.

I've almost given up on the pony. Cry yourself to sleep every night for seven years and that tiny wavering flame of hope becomes a distant dream....

But then I wake up get on with another day as a stoic but ponyless editor. And I realise that as long as Michael shares the dream, the desperate flame of hope can never be doused.

Thanks for being there, Mike. We'll crack this thing. One day!

I have a "pony" named Calvin I'll sell to you [cheap].

Pony might be a bit of a stretch, he's 17.2 hands tall - 1850 pounds! You gotta pay the shipping and you can't tell my wife what happened to her horse...

Tempting, but I'm holding out for a pony. A free pony. One that smiles a lot.

Steve Jobs will throw his name in the hat as a "Dark Pony" candidate for US President.

He will win & ride into the White House on Bruce The Yak (who becomes the White House pet).

He will open a posh Apple Store in a seldom used wing of the White House & add it to the tour (kinda like Disney...every ride exits through the Gift Shop).

He will pass a law that grants tax breaks for all PC-to-Mac converts.

The first electric / ethanol hybrid iCar rolls off a top-secret underground assembly line in San Francisco (November 2008).

When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.

1st Quarter:
Disturbing rumors of some sort of "secret pact" between Microsoft and Apple will emerge - along with some sort of lawsuit, targeting both companies.

One of the Cellphone providers will announce a built-in wi-fi interface included with their phone, allowing users to use an iPod touch as a wireless browser, without going through AT&T.

---

2nd Quarter:
Apple announces an iPhone touch upgrade, which disables the ability to use the unit with a non-AT&T carrier.

The Writer's strike ends, However, the fallout from the WGA strike affects everyone in the Film/Video industry in profound ways nobody, not the writers or the producers, expected.

Somebody releases a Linux/Unix GUI which suddenly makes the OS a viable OS for the average person. Microsoft and Apple admit whatever it was they agreed to, and it becomes public knowledge that they intend to work together to crush the latest verion of Linux.

Someone totally unexpected buys Digital Design - Announcment that totally redesigned versions of AVID and Protools will soon be available - to make them almost as good as FCP.

---

3d Quarter
The industry is in chaos. The upcoming end of Analog SD broadcast, along with fallout from the writer's strike, along with realtime and downloadable video from the internet is changing everything. Nobody quite knows what's happening or how to deal with it. Some major broadcast companies are collapsing, while others are reaping new fortunes.

The internet collapses for almost two days - overloaded with SPAM, DOS attacks, and video downloads. In a series of emergency meetings, something is finally done to deal with SPAM and DOS attacks.

---

4th Quater
Sony announces a new "consumer" format for HD Video, which solves most of the problems with HDV. Wayne hates the format even more than HDV.

lol! that's cynical!

Okay!

1st quarter: bruce the yak finds girlfriend LAFCPUG pony. Apple releases the iCar

2nd quarter: Microsoft allows Apple to rerelease msOffice and it rides in under the name: iOffice... Meanwhile, Steve Jobs takes chivalry to a higher level and introduces "Steve the knight" next to Bruce the Yak. Final Cut includes a "rescue the princess pony" game, with an option for a free upgrade to final cut studio 7.

3rd quarter: Microsoft buys Avid, and reinvents the Avid interface and calls it ms Avid. Protools get bought over and gets renamed mr avid. They get engaged. Writer's strike called off due to engagement ceremony.

4th quarter: Steve Job gets bored of chivalry and decides to venture into real estate and oil- the all new "iHouse" and "iOil". He might buy a football club and rename it 'mcpool'. Talks of a takeover of Macdonalds surface... Meanwhile, Bruce gets bored of monogamy..

[Pony might be a bit of a stretch, he's 17.2 hands tall - 1850 pounds! ]

You don't want one of them legs to step on your foot. That stings. If the corral hadn't been muddy and the hoof hadn't pushed my little 12-year-old foot down, I'd be Mr. MetalTarsa today.

First quarter-

Bruce the Yak is bar-mitzvahed.

Press banned from Keynote so nobody but SuperPass holders will revel in the reveal of the new superthin notebook, no hard analysis from fuzzy fanboys and girls.

Second quarter-

Not iBox-- IXBOX!

And maybe FCX. On a 16-core engine.

The Audio Meter display bug gets fixed. Option 4 no longer truncates the right end of your timeline.

Third Quarter-

OLED displays-- but not 40", who needs that for editing... take a year to bring the mouse from one side to the other. What? Keyboard control? Well... yeah!
Or... touchscreen! With built-in wiper.

Fourth quarter-

Apple buys AMD, and with it ATI, nailing two hardware control issues at once.

Xerox buys Apple.

Nada-Chair buys Xerox.

That was about two or three years ago, when we were relegated to watching on a big screen TV in some basement of the Moscone Center. Obviously were having a dampening effect on the reality distortion field.

Anyone here use a NadaChair product. This is the first I've heard of them and after a year in minor physio for a bike injury related neck pain, I'd try almost anything to avoid a recurrence.

To stay on topic

uhm...
ur...
(cough)... Canadians, irrationally exuberant over the at-par status of their dollar, buy up so much Apple and other electronic goods it shifts the balance of trade and then start buying gobs of american real estate made even more affordable by the subprime mortgage crisis, eventually accelerating into a Jones Soda cane sugar induced buying spree and somewhat inadvertently buy Coca Cola, Apple, Avid, and all the maple syrup farms in Vermont. Yeah that's it, maple syrup...
The sugar hangover will take 4 days to abate. Who wants a sugar cinnamon Beaver Tail?

1st Quarter
? Apple release the iPhone Nano (seeing as they have designed it already)

(...)

3rd Quarter
? A 15 year old boy from Toledo, Ohio is hailed as the next Bill Gates when he discovers a use for Apple TV. He immediately files for divorce from parents who have appeared on 3 consecutive "Dr. Phil's".

4th Quarter
? Several executive-level sackings are announced as weak sales of the new iPhone Shuffle (which randomly phones all stored contacts) lead the trades to speculate that Jobs has gone on walkabout.
