May I utilize "protected AAC" iTunes files that I purchased as temp music? Assuming it's ethical, can FCP accomodate this format? If not, is there a way to convert them?

you can pull tracks straight off an audio CD and use those.
they'll be slightly better quality as they're uncompressed

if you burn your file to an audio cd it'll be a 44.1k copy of the compressed file.
what you decide to do with that is your own business

No AAC in FCP, better off making AIFF file. Interesting new technique, saves you a CD:

? Open iMovie

? Import the track from the Media browser, add to the timeline

? Add a still frame or a piece of video to the timeline too. Can be anything.

? Select File>Share then select Quicktime>Expert Settings. Choose to export 'Sound to AIFF' and select 44.1k 16-bit

This will export the track without having to go out to CD and re-import from there. You need to have video or a photo on the timeline otherwise the trick won't work, but since you're only exporting audio it doesn't matter what it is. Tested in iMovie '06, can't vouch for latest version...

I like this innovative technique, but don't I still have the problem of converting a "protected" AAC (i.e. the iTune purchase) to an AIFF? That's the crux of my problem... Thanks.

Uh... read the posts again. The conversion process is exactly what we're outlining here

Converting the AAC to to an AIFF and re-importing it strips the copy protection.
