Using FCP 5.1.4, can I upgrade to Motion 3 only?

Hi, and thanks in advance for any help.

I'm on a new Macbook Pro Intel, OSX 10.4.11, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB, 667 MHz, Quicktime 7 Pro (7.2). I'm working with FCP Studio 1 (FCP 5.1.4, Motion 2, etc), and I bought the FCP 2 upgrade, but I'm a little concerned about upgrading the entire studio to 2, since I'm in the middle of a (small) project, and I've read some problems with QT 7.3.

My question is, do you recommend upgrading ONLY to Motion 3? I really want to learn and use it. If I can, must I upgrade to QT Pro 7.3 or can I stay in 7.2?

Thanks so much, Richard

Do not upgrade to Motion 3 if you're not installing the rest of the suite. Others things get installed with FCS that it needs. FCS will run with QT7.2.

Hi Tom: thanks for your response. I'll install the entire thing, but what about the upgrade to QT 7.3? Is it OK?

Thanks, Richard

I would not upgrade in the middle of a project unless I had to. QT7.3 is OK with FCS2. It has problems with older versions of FCP, pre-5.1 I believe.

My mistake. It turns out my QT is actually 7.2, running FCP 5.1.4 just fine. Can I continue to run QT 7.2 with FCP2?

I believe FCP 6 requires 7.3 if my hazy memory is still working.

You mean, FCS2. Yes, it will run on 7.1.6 or higher. You might need 7.2 for the updates, but I don't think you need 7.3 or .4.

I know this is not a direct answer to you question, but why not install the entire package on a NEW hard drive? Drives are pretty cheap these days. If you do a clean install of the OS and FCS2 on a new drive you could learn and experiment, then switch to your old drive to work on projects still in progress. When you are comfortable with the new programs, you can start new projects on the new drive, and even copy the old projects over when the time is right. Your old drive becomes your security blanket with the previous setup.

We should actually FAQ the compatible versions too - if anyone knows them all offhand, could you please list and post on the FAQ - or list them here and I'll do it.

Hi everyone: it's Richard, who started this thread this morning. Good news; I upgraded to FCS2, kept QT 7.2, all seems to be working just fine, including the project I'm working on. Thanks again for all your help.

Doesnt FCP 6.0.2 require 7.3?

I'm running FCP 6.0 with QT 7.2 and I don't have any problems. Does that mean I can't go to 6.0.2 without going to QT 7.3?
