Dell 2407WFP-HC 24" vs Apple Cinema HD Display 23"Posted by Guido Cassetta
Everyone here uses Dell monitors. Blacks are better, no green tint.
Unless you are using the Matrox MXO, THEN you need the ACD. But Dell all the way. www.shanerosseditor.com Listen to THE EDIT BAY Podcast on iTunes [itunes.apple.com]
My 2407WFPs are very nice, but it seems they are "end of life" here in Europe, they offered to send a 2408WFP which didn't get up to now. Don't use a 248 these are garbage for video work - though for just simple office work they are usable.

I have been looking to replace my 2 crt's and considered the Dell. Does anyone here use a calibration tool such as the Spyder 2 or the Pantone Huey. Are these tools useful for video applications or is video a different beast color wise from print and thus these tools are only useful for print.
So if I buy a Dell, should I get a calibration tool?
I use the Spyder3 Elite with the 24" and 30" Dell monitor and it works great.
I do a ton of print work which is why I calibrate and although this might start some sort of religious war about color conversion I find that my output via either a Kona card or Firewire comes amazingly close to WYSIWYG. I know there's this whole debate about having a CRT and color conversion with this tool or that, but I think if your accustomed to working in a calibrated [or maybe a better term would be characterized] environment your most of the way there. We output a lot of broadcast programing where the content goes to a QC company like IVC or Technicolor and it is rarely, if ever, rejected for problems with color. We are using Color more and more, if your monitors are "calibrated" and you rely on the scopes in color its a bit like flying an airplane IFR, you trust and follow your instruments, break out of the clouds and there's the runway.
I've just bought a second 2407WFP-HC (24-inch) however i've got to say i've been less than happy to find the thing is making a horrible humming noise... Back to Dell it goes which is less than good!
Having said that my first one is a beauty, couldn't be any happier with it (apart from the dell logo on the front )
The MXO will work with the Dell...just not as well as with the Apple monitor. It was designed with the Apple monitor in mind. The refresh rate is 59.94 where the Dells is 60...causing slight flickering of the image on the edges. And...well, it just looked better on the ACD. It looked right and clear. But, I haven't tested it since the new software came out that allows you to adjust. I should do that I suppose.
But I have the 2405s...the first models. The only ones available now are the 2408s...and every model is a little different, so my results still won't match reality. www.shanerosseditor.com Listen to THE EDIT BAY Podcast on iTunes [itunes.apple.com]
