Is there a way to change the timecode start on a clip to be captured?

Is there a way to change the timecode start on a clip to be captured?

I have a project I did previously in FCP 4.5. Have to revisit it and re-edit the project, I've since upgraded to 5.1.4 and some of the clips are against the edge of preset timecode. E.g. on one tape it striped it a minute beforehand, but when I had to quickly switch tapes, my DVX started earlier timecode. Now when FCP goes to find the beginning of the clip, it wants to have a little pre-roll and ends up going to the beginning of the tape looking for it. Can I modify the media start and/or end in the browser or otherwise? Help!

Am I guessing there isn't a way? or is there another forum I can check, outside LAFCPUG? I've seen nothing in the FAQ or this forum, so perhaps nobody here knows.

Or maybe everyone is busy?

You can change the timecode using modify timecode.

You can find out all about this in the FCP onbard help menu. Just go to Help > Final Cut Pro User Manual and type 'modify timecode' into the search bar. Double click any of the search results to go to that page.

If you want to modify the start time for capturing, you can make the clip offline and then change the media start time.

Tom,

Thanks.

The clip IS offline, I'd archived the project and taken the media off my drives after it was finished. Now I have to reload it. Can I change it in the browser? Clicking on it there does nothing. I can change the in/out times, but not the media start time.

TIA

Hmm- I just changed the Media Start time for an offline clip in the Browser, no problem.

Also, if you go to "Audio/Video Settings">Device Control Presets, you can change the preroll time needed- but if it's right at the beginning, this won't help you.

James. You are the man. Creating a new device control preset, or a copy of the one I was using and changing the pre-roll, made it work.

Everyone else, I love you guys. Seriously. Thank you.

I'm a still photographer, I live in Photoshop, and though I work in Final Cut quite a bit, not daily like many of you. As always, you've come through with the answer.

Alas, one large clip captured, but for some odd reason, there's a timecode skip right where I started capturing on the other one. Why isn't it possible to change the media start time in the browser? Feature request?

It's been a while since I've had to change Media Start/Stop times after initial logging, but I'm pretty sure that number becomes unchangeable if that clip has ever been captured. Then it retains those numbers. The way to do this is to drag that offline clip (log) back into the Log and Capture window, which will put the clip's In/Out points, notes etc. into the Log and Capture window metadata fields. Then relog the clip using Log and Capture. The new log has Media Start/Stop times that you can modify. Or, you could modify those times in Log and Capture before relogging.

My recollection is that this has changed in recent versions of FCP. If the clip is offline, the media start/end numbers can be reassigned.
