fixing footage that is backlit.

A director I am working for shot a scene outside in the afternoon with no light reflectors, so a bunch of the footage is seriously backlit. I know how to fix this in Photoshop with still images, so I assume there is way in FCP or color. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

One is to use Color Corrector to take down only Highlights. If your shadow areas are too dark then you may or may not get enough detail, but give it a shot anyway and increase the Lows. Lyric Media makes a free FCP plugin called Shadow-Highlight which does a good job clamping down on highlights and increasing shadow areas.

Thanks a lot Derek. I'll try that.

fcp also has a "levels" filter. kinda like photoshop.

interesting idea for you. export your footage as a filmstrip (or photojpeg/anim sequence) batch it all with the photosop levels tool. then reimport... might provide better results than the fcp equivalent.?.?.?
