O.T. Camera ConsiderationsPosted by Barry
I am looking to upgrade my "Old Reliable" Sony PD-150 Camcorder and not sure what is comparable out there. I am only working in DV with no real outlet for HD in the forseeable future. I am kind of looking at the PD-170 because of it's similarity to the PD-150, but have not done any research into it. Is there a better choice in the $5000 price range? Barry
DVX-100b. Best DV camera in existence.

If you want a DV tape based camcorder and loads of other features as well, then get an HVX-200 not 200A. The HVX shoots DVCPRO 25 = DV, DVCRO 50 = DigiBeta and DVCPRO 100 = 720p or 1080 true 4:2:2 High Definition. The cost should be right at $5000 or less since the HVX-200A is now shipping.
Ahh...and then you are future ready for HD. Good call John.

why would you suggest the 200 against the 200a? unless you buy a used 200, a 200a isnt a huge deal (if any) more expensive. if youre already gonna spend $4700. i think it would be kinda dumb not to go the extra $500 for the new and way better model...
of course a used hvx200 will go for $3800 $4500 so that may create an easier decision price-wise...
Yes but if you purchase the 200A you are getting far better chips which is the main problem in the 200 now, plus the 200a comes with a free 16gb P2 card in the box which is something to consider. Without a P2 card, its just a DV camera really and its oh so sweet to not have to shoot tape anymore...
yes it does.
its the HPX170 (coming in september) that doesn't. really, the most significant difference in the 200 and 200a is that the 200a is WAY better in low light. and whats funny, is that if you EVER use DV tape. there would be NO REASON to hold out for the HPX170 as as far as image quality goes, the HVX200a and HPX170 are identical. there are just a few features the 170 has (most id consider reasonably esoteric) that the 200a doesnt. but the 170 loses the tape drive in favor of a much smaller and lighter footprint. im told its about the size and weight of a dvx100b
